12 Bhavas — Houses of the Horoscope
Each house governs a specific area of life in your birth chart
Bhava (भाव) means "house" or "state of being." The 12 Bhavas divide the sky into 12 sectors, each representing a domain of human experience. The planets and signs occupying each house shape that area of your life. The 1st house begins at the Ascendant (Lagna) and moves counter-clockwise.

House Groupings in Vedic Astrology
Kendra Houses (1, 4, 7, 10) — Pillars of the Chart: The Kendra (angular) houses form the foundation of the horoscope. They represent the four pillars of life — self (1st), home and happiness (4th), partnerships (7th), and career and public life (10th). Planets placed in Kendra houses gain strength and prominence. Benefic planets in Kendras bestow success and stability, while malefics here can create challenges but also drive ambition.
Trikona Houses (1, 5, 9) — Most Auspicious, Dharma Houses: The Trikona (trine) houses are considered the most fortunate positions in a chart. The 1st house represents the self and purpose, the 5th house governs intelligence, creativity, children, and past-life merit (Purva Punya), and the 9th house rules fortune, dharma, higher wisdom, and the guru. Lords of Trikona houses are always considered benefic regardless of their natural nature.
Dusthana Houses (6, 8, 12) — Challenging Houses: The Dusthana houses are areas of difficulty and transformation. The 6th house brings enemies, debts, and disease but also the power to overcome them. The 8th house governs sudden events, longevity, hidden matters, and transformation through crisis. The 12th house represents losses, expenses, liberation (Moksha), and foreign lands. While challenging, these houses drive spiritual growth and inner strength when handled wisely.
Upachaya Houses (3, 6, 10, 11) — Houses That Improve with Age: Upachaya means "growth" or "increase." Malefic planets like Saturn, Mars, and Rahu actually perform well in these houses because their tough energy helps overcome obstacles. The 3rd house builds courage, the 6th defeats competition, the 10th drives career success, and the 11th fulfills desires and brings gains. Results from Upachaya houses get progressively better as you age.
Maraka Houses (2, 7) — Health Indicators: Maraka means "killer" or "death-inflicting." The 2nd and 7th houses are called Maraka Sthanas because their lords can trigger health crises during their planetary periods (Dashas). The 2nd house, being 12th from the 3rd (longevity), and the 7th house, being 12th from the 8th (longevity), have a natural association with the end of vitality. However, Maraka effects manifest as serious illness only when longevity is already exhausted — otherwise they may simply cause temporary health setbacks or life transitions.
