Pranayama — Breathing Techniques

Master your breath to master your mind, body, and life force
Pranayama (प्राणायाम) = Prana (life force) + Ayama (extension/control). It is the 4th limb of Ashtanga Yoga. The breath is the bridge between body and mind — by controlling breath, you control both. Regular pranayama increases vitality, calms the nervous system, and prepares the mind for meditation.

The Science of Breath

Puraka (inhalation) — draws prana/life force into the body
Kumbhaka (retention) — distributes and stores prana in the cells
Rechaka (exhalation) — expels toxins and carbon dioxide

The ratio of inhalation:retention:exhalation determines the effect. Beginners: 1:0:1 (no retention). Intermediate: 1:1:2. Advanced: 1:4:2.

Important Cautions

Practice on empty stomach — at least 4 hours after heavy meal, 2 hours after light meal.

Never force the breath — if you feel dizzy, nauseous, or uncomfortable, stop and breathe normally.

Avoid Kapalbhati and Bhastrika if: pregnant, menstruating, high blood pressure, heart disease, hernia, recent abdominal surgery, epilepsy.

Avoid retention (Kumbhaka) if: beginner, heart condition, high blood pressure. Only practice under expert guidance.

Cooling breaths (Sheetali/Sheetkari) — avoid in winter, cold weather, or if you have low blood pressure or respiratory congestion.

Surya Bhedana — avoid in summer or if you have excess Pitta (heat, inflammation, acidity).

Always practice pranayama BEFORE meditation, not after. Pranayama prepares the mind; meditation follows naturally.
