Meditation Techniques
Ancient practices for stilling the mind and awakening consciousness
Dhyana (ध्यान) is the 7th limb of Ashtanga Yoga — the practice of sustained, focused attention that leads to Samadhi (spiritual absorption). Regular meditation reduces stress, sharpens focus, and gradually reveals your true nature beyond the mind.
Meditation Essentials
| Element | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Posture | Sukhasana (cross-legged), Padmasana (lotus), or chair with feet flat | Spine straight allows energy flow. Comfort prevents distraction. |
| Time | Brahma Muhurta (4-6 AM) is best. Sunset is second best. | Mind is naturally calm before dawn. Vata energy supports meditation. |
| Duration | Begin 10 minutes, gradually increase to 20-45 minutes | Consistency matters more than duration. Daily 10 min beats weekly 1 hr. |
| Direction | Face East (sunrise energy) or North (spiritual axis) | Earth's magnetic field and solar energy support meditation in these directions. |
| Space | Dedicated corner, clean, quiet, with mat/cushion | Consistent space builds meditative energy over time (vibration memory). |
| Preparation | Light stomach, fresh clothes, face/hands washed | Physical purity supports mental purity. Heavy stomach causes drowsiness. |

Common Obstacles & Solutions
| Obstacle | Why It Happens | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Restless Mind | Untrained mind naturally wanders. This is normal. | Don't fight thoughts. Acknowledge and return to focus. Use mantra as anchor. |
| Drowsiness | Heavy meal, late night, or deep relaxation | Meditate early morning. Splash cold water on face. Open eyes slightly. |
| Physical Pain | Body not accustomed to sitting still | Start with chair. Stretch before sitting. Use cushion. Gradually increase duration. |
| Boredom | Expecting experiences or fireworks | Meditation is not entertainment. Boredom itself is an object of observation. |
| Inconsistency | Motivation fades after initial enthusiasm | Same time, same place, every day. Start with 5 minutes — never skip. |
| Emotional Releases | Suppressed emotions surface as mind quiets | Allow tears, sadness, or anger to pass. Don't judge. This is healing. |
