Ritucharya — Seasonal Living
Ayurvedic guidelines for diet and lifestyle through India's six seasons
← Back to Ayurveda
The Concept
Shishir (Late Winter)
Vasant (Spring)
Grishma (Summer)
Varsha (Monsoon)
Sharad (Autumn)
Hemant (Early Winter)
Ritucharya (ऋतुचर्या) = Ritu (season) + Charya (routine/conduct). Ayurveda divides the year into 6 Ritus, each lasting 2 months. As the sun and moon change position, the balance of doshas in nature — and in our bodies — shifts. Ritucharya teaches us to adjust diet, exercise, sleep, and daily habits to stay in harmony with nature's rhythms.
Shishir Ritu — Late Winter (January–February)
| Aspect | Guideline |
|---|---|
| Dosha State | Kapha accumulates, Agni (digestive fire) is strongest |
| Diet | Sweet, sour, salty tastes. Heavy, oily, warm foods. Ghee, sesame oil, jaggery, warm milk, nuts, wheat, new rice. This is when your body can digest the heaviest foods. |
| Avoid | Light, cold, dry foods. Fasting. Excessive bitter and astringent tastes. |
| Lifestyle | Oil massage (Abhyanga) with sesame oil. Exercise freely — body is strongest now. Warm clothing. Sunbathing. Stay warm. |
| Exercise | Maximum intensity — wrestling, gym, running. Body can handle peak physical exertion. |
| Sleep | Sleep early, wake at Brahma Muhurta. Can sleep slightly longer than other seasons. |
Vasant Ritu — Spring (March–April)
| Aspect | Guideline |
|---|---|
| Dosha State | Accumulated Kapha melts and aggravates. Agni weakens. Spring allergies and colds common. |
| Diet | Light, dry, warm, bitter, pungent, astringent foods. Barley, honey, mung dal, old rice, warm water with honey. Bitter greens (neem, karela, methi). |
| Avoid | Heavy, oily, sweet, sour foods. Cold drinks. Daytime sleeping. New grains. Dairy (increases Kapha). |
| Lifestyle | Dry powder massage (Udvartana). Nasya (nasal drops). Vamana (therapeutic vomiting if Kapha excess). Exercise moderately. Kapha-reducing herbs. |
| Exercise | Vigorous exercise to melt Kapha — running, hot yoga, brisk walking. Sweat daily. |
| Sleep | NEVER sleep during the day in spring — it severely aggravates Kapha. |
Grishma Ritu — Summer (May–June)
| Aspect | Guideline |
|---|---|
| Dosha State | Pitta accumulates. Vata may increase due to dryness. Agni is weakest (Bala decreases). |
| Diet | Sweet, light, liquid, cool foods. Milk, ghee, rice, mung dal, coconut water, sweet fruits (mango, melon), buttermilk, sattu drink. |
| Avoid | Salty, sour, pungent foods. Alcohol. Heavy, spicy, fried foods. Excessive exercise. |
| Lifestyle | Stay in cool places. Sandalwood paste on body. Wear light cotton. Gardens and water features. Night walks under moonlight. Air-conditioned/well-ventilated rooms. |
| Exercise | Minimal — swimming, early morning walks only. Avoid exercise in sun. Body is at its weakest. |
| Sleep | Daytime napping IS allowed in summer (only season). Nights are short — compensate with afternoon rest. |
Varsha Ritu — Monsoon (July–August)
| Aspect | Guideline |
|---|---|
| Dosha State | Vata aggravates severely. Pitta also increases. Agni is very weak. Most disease-prone season. |
| Diet | Sour, salty, oily foods. Old grains, warm soups, ghee, ginger, lemon, small portions. Boiled/purified water only. Honey in warm water. |
| Avoid | Raw salads, cold drinks, street food, heavy meals, leafy greens (may harbor insects), river/tank water. Avoid overeating. |
| Lifestyle | Boil drinking water. Keep home dry and fumigated. Wear dry clothes. Use medicated oils. Avoid getting wet in rain. Basti (therapeutic enema) is recommended in monsoon for Vata. |
| Exercise | Moderate — indoor exercise. Avoid exhaustion. Yoga and gentle stretching are ideal. |
| Sleep | Do NOT sleep during the day. Impairs already-weak digestion. Sleep early at night. |
Sharad Ritu — Autumn (September–October)
| Aspect | Guideline |
|---|---|
| Dosha State | Pitta aggravates severely (accumulated summer heat releases). Agni gradually strengthens. |
| Diet | Sweet, bitter, astringent foods. Ghee, milk, rice, wheat, green gram, sugar candy. Foods that pacify Pitta. Medicated ghee (Tikta Ghrita). |
| Avoid | Hot, spicy, sour, fermented foods. Curd, oil, excess fat. Alcohol. Direct sunlight exposure. |
| Lifestyle | Virechana (therapeutic purgation) recommended for Pitta. Moonlight therapy. Sandalwood, camphor, pearl paste. Wear pearls and white clothes. |
| Exercise | Moderate — early morning exercise. Avoid midday heat. Swimming is excellent. |
| Sleep | Regular hours. Do not sleep during the day. |
Hemant Ritu — Early Winter (November–December)
| Aspect | Guideline |
|---|---|
| Dosha State | Agni strengthens dramatically. Body builds strength. Vata may increase from cold and dryness. |
| Diet | Sweet, sour, salty tastes. Heavy, nourishing foods. Milk, ghee, sugarcane, sesame, meat soups, new rice, warm foods. Eat to your fill — digestion is at its peak. |
| Avoid | Light, cold, dry foods. Fasting or under-eating (strong Agni left unfed starts consuming body tissues). |
| Lifestyle | Warm oil massage daily (Abhyanga). Exercise well. Warm clothes. Heated rooms. Sexual activity is best tolerated in this season (body is strongest). |
| Exercise | Maximum intensity — body can handle it. Strength training, running, competitive sports. |
| Sleep | Can sleep slightly longer. Body needs rest to build strength. |
