From seed to harvest — practical tips for medicinal plant cultivation
Growing medicinal plants is the most direct way to connect with Aushadhi Vidhya. Even in apartments with limited space, a small collection of 5-10 plants can provide year-round remedies for common ailments.

Harvesting & Storage

Best Time to Harvest: Morning, after dew dries but before midday heat. This is when essential oil concentration is highest.

How to Harvest: Use clean, sharp scissors. Cut stems above a leaf node to encourage new growth. Never harvest more than 1/3 of a plant at once.

Drying Methods:
• Shade Drying (best): Hang bundles upside down in a warm, dry, ventilated area away from direct sun. Takes 5-7 days.
• Oven Drying: Spread on tray at lowest temperature (50°C) with door slightly open. Takes 2-4 hours.
• Sun Drying: Only for hardy herbs like neem leaves. Cover with thin cloth to prevent dust. Takes 2-3 days.

Storage: Airtight glass jars in a cool, dark place. Label with name and date. Most dried herbs last 6-12 months. Powdered herbs lose potency faster — grind only what you need for 1-2 months.
